Chem-Dry Cares

by | Sep 18, 2026 | Pet Urine Odor Removal

Most people meet a carpet cleaner on a bad day. The dog got sick on the rug, a cat found a corner behind the couch, and the smell has been winning ever since. That is the work. What almost nobody hears about is what Chem-Dry does with a piece of it.

Chem-Dry runs a program called Cleaning for the PAWS, and it supports rescue pet adoption. Brooke’s Chem-Dry Lawrence is a locally owned franchise, so this is a corporate program rather than something we invented here. We’re glad to be part of it. This page is an explanation of what it is, and nothing on it is trying to sell you a cleaning.

What Cleaning for the PAWS Is

Chem-Dry describes Cleaning for the PAWS as a giving program tied to its pet service work. That pet service is P.U.R.T.®, short for Pet Urine Removal Treatment. It is the treatment used when urine has soaked past the carpet face and down into the backing, the pad, and sometimes the subfloor underneath. A portion of what that work generates goes to pet rescue through the program.

We don’t publish the program’s running totals here, because those are Chem-Dry figures rather than ours. Chem-Dry reports them on the corporate side, and that is the right place to read them. What we can tell you is the part we actually see on a job: P.U.R.T. is the treatment those pet jobs use, and every one of them counts toward the same program.

There is nothing for a customer to sign up for, opt into, or ask about. No box to tick on the invoice and no round-up at the end. If we treat pet urine in your house, that job is already inside the program. People sometimes assume there is a donation option they missed. There isn’t one, and that is deliberate.

Why Best Friends Animal Society

The partner behind the program is Best Friends Animal Society, a national animal welfare organization. Best Friends states its goal plainly: end the killing of dogs and cats in America’s shelters. In practice that means adoption, foster placement, spay and neuter access, and the unglamorous shelter-by-shelter work of moving one county at a time off a bad number.

It is a sensible pairing once you look at the overlap. Shelters are full of animals somebody could no longer keep. Some of those surrenders trace back to a problem that looks small from the outside and enormous from inside the house.

The adoption side of that work is slower and less dramatic than people imagine. It is transport runs, foster networks, low-cost clinics, and shelters that need one more week of capacity to avoid a decision nobody wants to make. Money moved into that system tends to show up as space and time rather than as anything photogenic, and space and time are usually what is missing.

Why a Carpet Cleaner Cares About This

Here is the honest version. Pet odor is a real reason families give up on a pet. The accidents start, the smell settles in, a landlord notices or a spouse reaches a limit, and a dog that did nothing wrong ends up at a shelter. That path is common enough to have its own term in shelter paperwork: owner surrender.

It is also often fixable. Urine crystals sit down in the backing and the pad, and they reactivate with humidity, which is why a spot you scrubbed in March comes back on you in July. Surface cleaning never reaches them. P.U.R.T. is built to reach them, and when the odor genuinely goes rather than getting covered up, the reason for rehoming goes with it.

So the program is not charity bolted onto an unrelated business. It is the same problem worked from both ends: fix the mess that sends pets to shelters, and help the shelters place the ones already waiting there.

What This Looks Like on a Job

The program changes nothing about how a job runs. You call, we come out, we treat what is actually there. Chem-Dry uses Hot Carbonating Extraction, a carbonation-based process that uses about 80% less water than steam cleaning, so carpets dry in 1 to 2 hours instead of sitting damp for up to 12 to 24 hours. In a house with animals in it, that shorter window matters more than most people expect.

Brooke’s Chem-Dry Lawrence has served Douglas County since 2005. We work in ordinary houses with ordinary pets in them, and there is no version of this you need to apologize for on the phone. Tell us what happened and where, and we’ll tell you what we can do about it.

If You Are Thinking About Adopting

The flooring question comes up constantly, and it deserves a straight answer. People hesitate to adopt because they are picturing what a new animal will do to the carpet. That is a fair worry. It is also a solvable one. An accident on carpet is a cleaning problem, not a permanent condition, and that holds for the first confusing week of a rescue dog learning a new house as much as it does for a senior cat years later.

If a pet is the right call for your household, don’t let the carpet make the decision for you.

If you already have one and the odor keeps coming back, call us at (785) 760-8000 or read how our pet odor removal service works. We’ll tell you honestly what the carpet can be brought back from, and we’ll say so when it can’t.
