Here’s the order, and the things that make it worse.

Do This, In This Order

1. Get the solids up first if there are any, without pressing down.

2. Blot with a thick white cloth or a stack of paper towels. Press straight down and hold. Stand on it if it’s a big one. You’re trying to pull liquid up into the cloth.

3. Replace the cloth and repeat until a fresh one comes away nearly dry. This takes longer than people expect and it’s the most important step, because every drop you lift now is a drop that never reaches the pad.

4. Rinse lightly with cool water and blot again. A little water, then lift it back out. The aim is to dilute what’s left, not to soak the area.

5. Weight it. Put a thick pad of towels over the spot with something heavy on top and leave it an hour or two. It keeps drawing moisture up while you get on with your day.

The Four Things That Make It Worse

Rubbing. It spreads the spot outward and frays the carpet fibers, so even after the stain is gone that patch looks different.

Heat. No steam machine, no hair dryer, no hot water. Urine is a protein and heat sets protein permanently. This is the most common way a removable problem becomes a permanent one.

Ammonia-based cleaners. Urine already contains ammonia. To an animal the spot now smells more like a place to go, not less.

Piling on products. One appropriate product is fine. Three different ones layered on top of each other leaves residue that attracts dirt, and it limits what we can safely use later.

Vinegar and Baking Soda

The internet’s favourite answer, and it’s genuinely fine for a fresh, small accident on synthetic carpet. It helps with the immediate smell.

What it doesn’t do is reach urine that has already gone into the pad, and it does nothing about crystals that have formed. So if it works, great. If the smell returns in a week, that tells you the problem was deeper than the surface and no amount of repeating it will change that.

When to Stop and Call

• The smell came back after you thought you’d dealt with it.
• You’re finding spots you didn’t know about.
• It’s a wool or Oriental rug. Don’t experiment on those.
• The same place is being used repeatedly.
• You can smell it from the doorway.

Any of those means it’s below the surface, and surface treatments have gone as far as they can.

Three Depths, Three Different Jobs

On the fibers only. A fresh accident, caught and blotted quickly. Often comes out with a normal cleaning.

Into the backing and pad. The usual case by the time anyone calls. Surface cleaning won’t reach it and this is what P.U.R.T. exists for.

Through to the subfloor. Repeated accidents in the same place, or one large one on a floor with no barrier. Treatable, but the honest conversation is different and sometimes involves the pad.

How to Tell Which You Have

The Smell Comes Back on Warm Days

The clearest signal there is. Heat and humidity release odor from urine that has crystallised below the surface. If the room is fine in the morning and noticeable by mid-afternoon, or if it returned when the weather turned, the source is below the fibers.

You’ve Already Cleaned It More Than Once

If a surface clean fixed it for a few days and it came back, that isn’t a failed cleaning. That’s a correct cleaning of the wrong layer.

The Spot Is Stiff or Crunchy

Press the carpet with your fingers. Dried urine crystals make the fibers feel stiff rather than soft. If you can feel the edge of the spot, there’s volume there.

Look at the Back

If it’s on a rug or you can lift a corner of carpet at a doorway, look at the underside. A stain visible from the back went all the way through, and there’s no ambiguity left.

The Spot Is Bigger Than It Looks

Liquid spreads outward as it soaks down, so the area underneath is usually wider than the mark on top. A palm-sized stain often sits over a dinner-plate-sized area in the pad.

What Not to Do While You Wait

Don’t keep applying products. Most store sprays are surface treatments, and layering them adds residue to a spot that already has a problem underneath.

Don’t use a steam machine. Heat sets protein, and urine is a protein. It also adds a lot of water to something that’s already wet below.

Do stop the animal using the spot again if you can. That does more good than anything in a bottle.

Why Cat Urine Is Worse

It’s more concentrated. Cats evolved in dry environments and their kidneys are efficient, so the same volume carries more of what causes the smell.

It contains felinine. This is the real difference. Felinine is a compound largely unique to cats, and as it breaks down it releases sulphur-containing gases. That’s the sharp, catches-in-the-back-of-your-throat quality that dog urine doesn’t have.

Cats repeat. A dog that has an accident usually had one accident. A cat that has started using a spot will keep using that spot, so by the time anyone calls, the same square foot has been saturated many times.

Dog accidents come in larger volume, so a single one spreads further and goes deeper. A big dog on a carpet with a pad underneath can put liquid all the way to the subfloor in one go.

Dogs also tend to go near doors, which is where people track in the most soil, so the two problems compound.

What They Have in Common

Both go through the carpet. That’s the part that matters more than the species.

Urine passes the fibers into the backing, into the pad if there is one, and onto the subfloor. Only a fraction of it is in the part you can see. Cleaning the surface removes that fraction, the smell fades for a few days, and then a warm afternoon brings it back, because the source was never touched.

That’s why store sprays and rented machines fail on this specific problem while working fine on a coffee spill. They’re built to clean a surface, and the problem isn’t on the surface.

Why Time Matters More With Cats

Fresh urine is easier to treat than old urine for both animals. But because cats repeat and hide it, cat problems are usually discovered late, after many deposits in the same place.

That’s the range for most homes. Closer to 12 with pets, kids or an entry that opens onto gravel. Closer to 18 for a formal room with light traffic.

What Actually Protects a Wood Floor

Matting at every exterior door, and a rule about boots in winter. Salt and ice melt are abrasive and they will get ground into the finish.

Felt pads under furniture, checked once a year. They wear out and collect grit, at which point they’re doing the opposite of their job.

What Damages It, Usually With Good Intentions

Wet mopping. The most common one. Water gets into the seams, wood swells, and repeated cycles cup or gap the boards. A damp cloth is fine. A dripping mop is not.

Mop-and-shine products. They build a film that goes cloudy and traps dirt, and a dull floor tempts people to apply more of the thing that dulled it. Much of what looks like a worn-out finish is this buildup, and it comes off.

Steam mops. Heat and moisture together, driven into the seams under pressure. Some manufacturers void warranties over it.

Vinegar. A popular internet remedy and it’s acidic. Over time it etches polyurethane and leaves the floor permanently dull.

The Signs You’re Due

The floor looks hazy rather than dirty, and mopping doesn’t change it. Traffic lanes read differently from the edges of the room. There’s a visible line where a rug has been. Or the boards feel slightly tacky underfoot, which is residue.

None of those mean the finish is gone. They usually mean there’s something on top of it.

Why the Interval Pays

Cleaning removes the grit that abrades the finish. Every year you keep grit out of the traffic lanes is a year further from a refinishing bill that costs many times what cleaning does.

The floor is also the largest surface in most rooms, and it sets how the room reads more than anything else in it.

The Comparison That Matters

Before looking at the number, it’s worth knowing what the alternatives cost.

What Moves the Price

• Square footage. The main driver, and the rate improves with area.
• How much buildup there is. Years of mop-and-shine product takes more work than a floor cleaned properly all along.

• The finish type. Polyurethane, wax and oil-finished floors need different handling. Wax in particular is not treated like the others.
• Engineered vs solid. Both fine, and both are reasons a low-moisture method matters.

Why Low Moisture Isn’t Optional on Wood

Water is what damages wood floors. It gets into the seams between boards, into the subfloor, and wood swells when it absorbs moisture and shrinks when it dries. Do that repeatedly and boards cup, gap or lift, and that damage is a refinishing problem rather than a cleaning one.

This is why a wet mop is bad for hardwood even though it feels like cleaning, and why we use a low-moisture process. The floor is damp for minutes, not hours.

What You Get for It

Buildup and grit lifted out of the grain and the bevels between boards, which is where it actually collects. A floor that looks like its finish rather than like a film over its finish. And no dirt-attracting residue left behind to start the cycle again.

What You’re Actually Looking At

Most hardwood floors have a finish on top, usually polyurethane. You walk on the finish, not on the wood.

So there are three different problems that look similar from standing height:

The finish is dull or hazy. Usually residue from cleaning products, plus fine grit. This is a cleaning problem.

The finish is worn through in places. Traffic lanes have lost their coating and the bare wood is exposed. This needs recoating or refinishing.

The wood itself is damaged. Deep scratches, water stains that have gone grey or black, cupping. This needs refinishing or repair.

The Test

Find a dull area. Put a few drops of water on it and wait ten minutes.

The water beads and the floor is unchanged: the finish is intact. Your floor is dirty, not worn. Cleaning will help and refinishing would be a waste of money.

The water soaks in and darkens the wood: the finish is gone in that spot and the wood is exposed. Cleaning won’t fix that, and you should stop putting water on that floor.

Do it in a traffic lane and again in a corner nobody walks on. The difference between those two spots tells you how much of the floor is affected.

Why So Many Floors Just Look Bad

Most dull hardwood is dull because of what’s been put on it.

Mop-and-shine products, oil soaps and some all-purpose cleaners leave a film. Each application adds another layer, and the layers trap dirt and go cloudy. People respond to a dull floor by applying more of the product that dulled it.

That buildup can be removed. Under it is very often a perfectly good finish, and the floor looks dramatically better without a single day of refinishing.

What Cleaning Does

We clean hardwood with a low-moisture process, because standing water is what damages wood floors. It lifts the buildup and the grit out of the grain and the bevels between boards, and the floor is dry within an hour or two.

Why Dry Time Is the Real Variable

The Working Schedule

What Sealer Actually Does

Grout is cement, and cement is porous. Under a microscope it’s full of open channels. When something spills, it doesn’t sit on grout the way it sits on tile. It goes in.

Sealer fills those pores. A spill then beads or sits on the surface for a while instead of soaking straight down, which gives you time to wipe it up.

That’s the whole mechanism. It buys you time.

What It Does Not Do

Sealer does not make grout stain-proof. Leave red wine on sealed grout overnight and you’ll still have a problem.

It does not make grout waterproof, and it won’t fix cracked or crumbling grout. That’s a repair, not a coating.

It also doesn’t last forever. Foot traffic and cleaning wear it down. Two to five years is realistic depending on the room, and a shower wears faster than a guest bathroom floor.

The Timing Rule That Matters Most

Never seal dirty grout.

Sealer doesn’t clean. It locks in whatever is there. Seal grout that’s two shades dark and you’ve preserved that color and made it harder to get out later.

Which is why sealing is offered right after a cleaning. Not because it pads the invoice, but because that’s the only moment it makes sense to do it. Clean first, seal the clean grout, and the seal is protecting the result you just paid for.

How to Tell If Yours Is Still Sealed

Put a few drops of water on the grout line and wait a couple of minutes.

Beads up or sits there: the seal is working, leave it alone.

Soaks in and darkens the grout: the seal is gone or was never there.

Two minutes, no cost, and it answers the question better than any recommendation.

Where It’s Worth It

Worth it: kitchen floors, entryways, bathroom floors, showers, and any light-colored grout anywhere. These are the places spills and traffic actually happen.

Usually not urgent: a guest bathroom nobody uses, or a floor sealed in the last couple of years that still passes the water test.
