Persian & Oriental Rug Cleaning in Lawrence, KS

A hand-knotted Persian rug can take a weaver two to five years to complete. The wrong cleaning method can damage it in under an hour.

Mass-market carpet cleaning equipment is calibrated for synthetic broadloom. It drives heat and water into the pile without considering how moisture distributes through the backing. For a hand-knotted rug dyed with natural pigments, that’s a real problem.

Dyes bleed under heat and excess moisture, knot structure distorts, and damage like that can’t be reversed.

Brooke’s Chem-Dry uses Hot Carbonating Extraction, a low-moisture process appropriate for delicate natural-fiber construction. Call (785) 760-8000 to schedule or to ask about your specific rug before committing to an appointment.

What Makes Persian and Oriental Rugs Different

Persian and Oriental rugs share a construction method that sets them apart from what most carpet cleaners handle. Wool or silk pile is knotted individually around warp threads, typically cotton or wool, in dense configurations that can run deep into the pile. The knot density, pile height, and backing material all determine how moisture moves during cleaning.

The dyes are the other issue. Traditional rugs use natural dye sources: madder for reds, indigo for blues, pomegranate for golds and tans. These dyes behave differently under heat, alkaline cleaners, and excess moisture than synthetic dyes do. Bleeding is a real risk, and once it happens, it can’t be reversed.

Steam cleaning drives heat and water into the pile and backing simultaneously. HCE uses about 80% less water than steam cleaning, which means less moisture in the knot structure, less thermal stress on the dyes, and a meaningfully lower risk profile for rugs at this level of investment.

What We Check Before We Start

Before any oriental rug cleaning begins, the technician inspects the rug directly. That inspection covers fiber type (wool pile, silk accents, or full-silk construction), dye type, the condition of the backing, and any pre-existing stains or prior water damage. Dye type is the most consequential variable.

If dye stability is uncertain, spot tests run on a non-visible area before cleaning starts, and you’ll know the results before anything proceeds.

Rugs with very worn pile, actively shedding backing, or significant prior water damage may not be suitable candidates for HCE cleaning. If a rug isn’t a good fit, you’ll hear that upfront, not after the fact. The technician’s job is to give you an honest read on what the rug actually needs.

The Cleaning Process

HCE is applied at settings appropriate for natural-fiber rug construction, not the higher-intensity settings used for synthetic broadloom. The carbonating solution lifts embedded soil toward the surface rather than pushing it deeper into the backing. Extraction follows.

Because HCE uses about 80% less water than steam cleaning, dry time is approximately 1 to 2 hours. The rug is not flooded, not rolled up wet, and not left sitting damp overnight.

For rugs with significant pet odor saturation, P.U.R.T.® (Pet Urine Removal Treatment) may be applicable. The technician assesses during the pre-inspection and advises whether it’s a fit for your rug. Call (785) 760-8000 if you have a pet odor situation you’d like to describe before scheduling.

Cleaning vs. Restoration

Brooke’s Chem-Dry cleans rugs.

What we don’t offer: reweaving damaged sections, re-dyeing faded areas, repairing fringe, re-backing deteriorating backing, or off-site immersion washing. Those services belong with a specialist rug restorer, not a cleaning company.

If the technician’s inspection shows a rug needs restoration work rather than cleaning, you’ll hear that before any work starts. A rug that needs a restorer isn’t going to benefit from being cleaned first. We’d rather tell you that upfront than take your money on a service that won’t solve the underlying problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you clean silk rugs or rugs with silk accents?

It depends on the rug’s construction and current condition. Silk accents woven into a wool-pile rug are often cleanable with appropriate process settings. Full-silk rugs require a closer look: the fiber is more fragile, and dye stability can vary significantly from one piece to the next. The technician will tell you what’s appropriate for your specific rug during the pre-inspection. In some cases, a full-silk rug is better suited to a specialist.

What if my rug has natural dyes that might bleed?

That’s exactly why we spot test before cleaning. If a dye is unstable, we find that out on a small non-visible area before touching the rest of the rug. You’ll know what the test shows before we proceed. We won’t clean over an uncertain dye stability result without telling you first.

Do you also clean wool rugs?

Yes. Many Persian and Oriental rugs have wool pile, and our process handles wool well. If you have a wool rug that isn’t a hand-knotted Oriental style, see our wool rug cleaning page for more detail on how we approach wool-specific cleaning.
