Will Cleaning Ruin My Wool or Oriental Rug?

by | Aug 21, 2026 | Rug Cleaning

This is the question that stops most people from booking. The rug was expensive, or it came from someone, and the fear isn’t that cleaning won’t work. It’s that it’ll come back wrong. Faded, stiff, shrunk, or smelling like a wet basement.

That fear is reasonable. Wool and hand-knotted rugs can be damaged by cleaning. Here’s what actually causes it and what we do differently.

What Actually Ruins a Wool Rug

Too Much Water

Wool absorbs a lot of water and holds it. A rug saturated in a driveway or a truck-mounted flood clean has a backing, sometimes a pad, and no way to drain. It can take days to dry, and a wool rug that stays wet develops odor and can rot at the foundation of the pile.

This is the single most common cause of a ruined rug, and it has nothing to do with the cleaner being careless. It’s the method.

The Wrong pH

Wool is a protein fiber, closer to hair than to the synthetic in most wall-to-wall carpet. Strongly alkaline cleaners strip it. That’s what turns a soft rug stiff and brittle, and it doesn’t reverse.

Dye Bleed

Older and hand-made rugs often use dyes that aren’t fully colorfast. Introduce enough water and heat without testing first and the red in a pattern runs into the cream. Once it’s moved, it’s moved.

Fringe Handled Like Carpet

Fringe on a hand-knotted rug isn’t decoration sewn on the end. It’s the foundation of the rug, the warp threads the whole thing is tied to. Machine-scrubbing it damages the structure.

What We Do Instead

We test before we clean. Fiber identification and a dye-stability check on an inconspicuous area, every time, before anything is applied. If a rug isn’t a candidate for cleaning we tell you, rather than finding out halfway through.

We use far less water. Hot Carbonating Extraction lifts soil with carbonation rather than flooding the rug, using about 80% less water than steam cleaning. Less water in means the rug comes back dry rather than damp, which removes the biggest risk entirely.

The solution is gentle. The Natural, our core cleaner, works through carbonation rather than heavy alkaline soaps, so it isn’t stripping the fiber. It also leaves no dirt-attracting residue in the pile.

Fringe is handled by hand.

Some rugs are better cleaned off site. If yours is one, we’ll say so and arrange pickup and delivery so you don’t have to move it.

The Question to Ask Any Cleaner

Ask what they do to test dye stability before they start. It’s a short question and the answer tells you most of what you need to know. Anyone who treats a hand-knotted wool rug the same as a synthetic runner is the risk.
